It appears that the search for Rachel Morin has taken a tragic turn.
Maryland authorities believe the body of the missing 37-year-old—who disappeared on Aug. 5 while on the Ma & Pa Heritage Trail in the town of Bel Air—has been found.
"While it was all of our hope...that Rachel would be found safe," officials from the Harford County Sheriff's Office said during an Aug. 6 media briefing, "at about 1:07 p.m., a citizen called 911 to report a female's body had been located off the trail. At that time, it was obvious that this person was deceased."
The officials noted that after the discovery, the case then went from a missing person's investigation to a homicide investigation. However, the identity of the body, as well as a cause and manner of death, have yet to be formally determined.
"While we firmly believe this is the body of Rachel Morin, that final determination, that final say belongs with the medical examiner," authorities continued, "and that has not happened yet."
Over the weekend, Rachel's boyfriend reported her missing when she didn't return home on the evening of Aug. 5. Soon after, the mom-of-five's car was found at an entrance to the trail, with Rachel nowhere in sight.
As the investigation continues and Rachel's family awaits the official word from authorities, her sister Rebekah Morin has started a GoFundMe in her honor.
"It is with devastating sadness and a broken heart that our family has been hit with yet another heartbreak," Rebekah wrote. "My sister, Rachel Morin went missing on Saturday August 5 2023 around 6pm."
"This was not an accidentally death, and she did not go willingly and she deserves a funeral worthy of her her beauty," she continued. "If there are any remaining funds they will go towards things her 5 children may need."
